SCHMID/p pDr. Steven R. Schmid received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Illinois Institute ofTechnology in 1986, and was employed as a design engineer at Triodyne, Inc. until 1989. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University in 1993 at which time he joined the University of Notre Dame as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1999. He performs research and teaches courses in the general/p pareas of manufacturing, metal forming, tribology, biomechanics and design. Dr. Schmid is a co-author of the textbook Fundamentals of Machine Elements, published by McGraw-Hill. He is also the co-author of the popular manufacturing textbook Manufacturing Engineering and Technology, published by Prentice Hall. He is currently working on the fourth edition of Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials. He has written over fifty technical papers. Among his honors, Dr. Schmid has received a National Science Foundation CAREER award (1994). a John T.
