RILM is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that documents the world’s published writings about all
musical traditions and makes this knowledge accessible to research and performance communities worldwide via digital collections and advanced tools. RILM has contributors all over the world and is sponsored by the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and Documentation Centres (IAML), the International Musicological Society (IMS), and the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM).
RILM provides bibliographic authority records that are created and updated by RILM Abstracts of Music Literature’s editorial staff as part of the curation and indexing process. Most records include the following:
● Known identifiers (ISNI, VIAF, BnF)
● Names, and name equivalencies
● Basic biographical information (birth date, death date, gender, birthplace, death place)
● Source citations and URL
Within RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, RILM indexes personal names, work titles, and other information as part of subject headings. The subset provided to VIAF includes terms referenced within both RILM Abstracts and the full-text encyclopedia projects, including MGG Online and RILM Music Encyclopedias. As of now, there are approximately 11,000 records in this subset, but this dataset will include more terms and encompass a larger scope of RILM bibliographic authorities over time.
