Short description of the institution (max. 10 lines)

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) combines the holdings, services and staff of both the former National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada. As outlined in the Preamble to the Library and Archives of Canada Act, LAC’s mandate is as follows:

Short description of the authority data

Until 2018, LAC records in VIAF included those for both the English and French language of cataloguing environments.  In 2018, all of the LAC authority records were withdrawn in preparation for re-loading only those with 040 $b fre. The LAC file in VIAF now contains authority records for persons, corporate bodies, geographical names and titles when the language of cataloguing is French.  Supplied in MARC 21 format for authority data.

LAC is a NACO participant, therefore authority records created by LAC for use when the language of cataloguing is English, 040 $b eng, are found in the LC/NACO file.

Data provided to VIAF

-          Authority records for names of persons, corporate bodies, geographical names and titles are created by LAC using Worldshare Record Manager.

-          Bibliographic records created by LAC using WorldShare Record Manager are found in WorldCat.
