Short description of the institution

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) combines the holdings, services and staff of both the former National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada. As outlined in the Preamble to the Library and Archives of Canada Act, LAC’s mandate is as follows:

• to preserve the documentary heritage of Canada for the benefit of present and future generations;
• to be a source of enduring knowledge accessible to all, contributing to the cultural, social and economic advancement of Canada as a free and democratic society;
• to facilitate in Canada co-operation among communities involved in the acquisition, preservation and diffusion of knowledge;
• to serve as the continuing memory of the Government of Canada and its institutions.

Bibliothèque et Archives Canada (BAC) réunit les collections, les services et le personnel de deux anciennes institutions, la Bibliothèque nationale du Canada et les Archives nationales du Canada. Tel que libellé dans le Préambule de la Loi sur la Bibliothèque et les Archives du Canada, le mandat de BAC consiste à :

• Préserver le patrimoine documentaire pour les générations présentes et futures.
• Être une source de savoir permanent accessible à tous, et qui contribue à l'épanouissement culturel, social et économique de la société libre et démocratique que constitue le Canada.
• Faciliter au Canada la concertation des divers milieux intéressés à l'acquisition, à la préservation et à la diffusion du savoir.

Short description of the authority data

Since 2018, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) creates its name authority records in OCLC's WorldShare Management Services (WMS) integrated library management system. The English-language authority records are created in the LC/NACO file and are available under VIAF's contributor Library of Congress/NACO. The French-language authority records are created in the Canadiana file, which is governed by the Francophone Name Authority Program (PFAN) and are available under Library and Archives Canada/PFAN.

Established in 2020 by Library and Archives Canada, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec and 15 Quebec francophone libraries from the Partenariat des bibliothèques universitaires du Québec, the Francophone Name Authority Program (PFAN) is the program by which participating institutions contribute to the Canadiana name authority file by supplying authority records for agents, places, works and expressions.

Depuis 2018, Bibliothèque et Archives Canada (BAC) crée ses notices d'autorité de noms dans le système intégré de gestion de bibliothèque Services de gestion WorldShare (WMS) d'OCLC. Les notices d'autorité en langue anglaise sont créées dans le fichier LC/NACO et sont disponibles dans VIAF sous le contributeur Library of Congress/NACO. Les notices d'autorité en langue française sont créées dans le fichier Canadiana, qui est régi par le Programme francophone des autorités de noms (PFAN), et sont disponibles dans VIAF sous Library and Archives Canada/PFAN.

Mis sur pied en 2020 par Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec et 15 bibliothèques francophones du Partenariat des bibliothèques universitaires du Québec, le Programme francophone des autorités de noms (PFAN) est le programme par lequel les institutions participantes contribuent au fichier d'autorité Canadiana en fournissant des notices d'autorité pour les agents, les lieux, les œuvres et les expressions.
