At a meeting of a number of gentlemen from various parts of the district of Maine holden at the court house in Portland, October 18th, 1793, in consequence of a printed notification in the words following, viz. "Notice. As the time of revising the constitution of this commonwealth is fast approaching, and as it seems the general opinion that a separation of Maine must then take place; it is earnestly requested that as many gentlemen as conveniently can, will attend at the court house to morrow evening, at six o'clock, to consider and adopt such measures as shall appear most expedient to effect the abovementioned important object. Thursday, October 17th, 1793." The Honorable Peleg Wadsworth, Esquire, was chosen chairman, and Samuel Freeman, Esquire, clerk. ... Portland, October 21st, 1793. Gentlemen, ... we do hereby request that you would call a meeting for the choice of delegates to form a convention . ‎(1)
