WILLHELM TELL --- GUILLAUME TELL GESLER despotischer Landvogt in der Scweiz, liess auf oeffentlichem Platze seinen Hut auf eine Lanze setzen, und befahl den Inwohnern, bei Strafe, den selben im vorübergehen demüthig zu grüssen ; TELL aber, ein berühmter // Bogenschütz war grossmüthig genug den Befehl zu verspotten. GESLER gerieth deswegen in Zorn : er wollte den Verwegenen züchtigen. Kanst du, sprach er zu ihm, deinem Sohne dort den Apfel vom Kopfe schiessen ? // so vergehe ich dir dein Verbrechen. TELL traf glücklich den Apfel! und was soll der andere Pfeil, den du bei dir hast ? hätte ich zu meinem Leide, meinen Sohn, war die Antwort, getödtet, so hätte dich dieser getroffen. // Aufdieses liess der Landvogt den beherzten Mann in Ketten schliessen, und verdammte ihn im Schloss liegt im Luzerner-See. GESLER lies den Gefangenen zu Schiffe bringen, und // begleitet ihn selber, damit er sicher dahin käme. Aber die Winde wehten heftig ; ein Sturm entstand, die Wellen droheten dem Schiffe den Untergang : selbst die Schiffer bebten und baten den Landvogt den Geschlossenen als einen geübten // Seemann loszulassen, damit er das Ruder regire. Beides geschah-schon war man dem Lande nahe. Schnell und kühn, engeflammet vom Geiste der Freiheit raffte TELL Pfeil und Bogen zu sich, und sprang an Strand : das Schiff wankte // vom Stosse des Trittes zurück; Doch GESLER kam bald, und grimmig ans Gestade, er tratt aus, entschlossen dem entflohenen nachzueilen, Aber TELL erschoss aus dem Gebüsch den Tirannen. Trois des plus courageux habitans des Cantons de Schwitz, d'Ury et d'Unterwald, nommés, Melchtal, Stauffacher et Walter-Fürst avoient résolu d'affranchir leur pays des traitemens barbares qu'exercoient les Couv.¦eurs¦ que leur avoit donnés // Albert d'Autriche. Ils avoient attiré dans leur parti neuf autres amis surs, et déja le jour du soulevement étoit fixé, lorsque GESLER Gouv¦eur¦ d'Ury s'avisa d'un genre de Tyrannie aussi horrible que ridicule. Il fit mettre son chapeau sur une // perche dans la place du marché d'Altorff, et il ordonna qu'on saluât ce chapeau, sous peine de la vie. GUILLAUME TELL un des douze conjurés ayant refusé de saluer GESLER le condamna à mourir, lui offrant cependant sa grace à condition // que d'un seul coup de flèche il abbatroit une pomme placée sur la tête de son fils. Le Père tira et fut assez heureux pour abattre la pomme. Pourquoi donc avois tu deux flèches, lui demanda le Gouv¦eur¦ Si j'avois blessé mon fils, répondit TELL, la seconde t'étoit // destinée. Le Tyran furieux le fit enchainer, et veux qu'il soit transporté sur le champ au château de Rufnach, situé au milieu du Lac de Lucerne ; lui même se charge de l'y conduire, et il descent dans la même barque. Une violante tempête s'éleve. Les Matelos // s'écrient qu'ils sont perdus si TELL ne prend le gouvernail. On le déchaîne, et bientot on approche du rivage. Alors TELL saisit un moment favorable , et transporté par le Génie de la Liberté, s'élance de la Barque, que , du même mouvement, il la repousse, // dans les flots. Muni de ses armes toujours sures, qu'il a scu enlever avec lui, il se cache dans des broussailles pour y attendre le moment de la vengeance.
